Releasing Privacy

I was recently watching 60 Minutes on Facebook and realized how ignorant some people really are. Some people don't realize that what they write online is available for the entire universe to see. If you want something to stay private then do NOT write it online! Not even in an e-mail! One woman on the show used to be a teacher and wrote something about how annoyed she was of her students on her Facebook wall. She thought this was private for her Facebook Friends to see only but she failed to check her privacy settings so her Wall was open for the entire world to see. One of the student's parents saw her post and spread it around. She soon got fired from the school. She had been teaching for 10 years or more I believe. She blamed Facebook but she should have really blamed herself for writing something on a public website that anyone can simply click on and read. No matter what your "privacy" settings are, nothing is really private anymore. Most people don't even care about their privacy anymore. They feel like it is not a right to have your own privacy anymore. They feel that it is okay to have all of your personal information out there and really it is not. This is why I do not write anything online that I don't want to share. It is scary when you type in your name in Google and find your phone number, home address, birth date, age, and etc. Someone can look you up online one minute and the next be staring at your house on Google Maps. This reminds me of a movie I saw recently where a girl wanted to go talk to this guy she had met so she went to his Facebook and saw he had hockey practice and went to see him there. Talk about a stalker! We should do something about our privacy until it is too late, but until then, do not write anything online that you don't want to share with the world!

  1. FaceBook and other social media sites offer a lot of potential for trouble. My rule is don't say anything on social media you wouldn't say on National TV.

When we go through the hiring process we scan social media to learn more about applicants. It amazes me to see them bad mouth their current boss. Talk about something they stole from work, how they went to work drunk or high, etc.

Alot of people think you are violating their privacy when you check them out online. As a businessman I think I would be doing my company a disservice if I did not use all the resources available to make a good hiring decision.

  2. I agree with you it’s scary out there, and I am a guy. I get friend requests from Facebook from people that I don’t even know. The only reason I have my Facebook is to keep in touch with my family that is out of the country. If there was a less creepier site I would be on it. Same with Google and Google maps, I Googled my address one time and in the satellite view I saw my car parked on the drive way. I know technology is there to improve our searching and to get in touch with more people. Because I do have to admit that when I need to look for a restaurant and or a business Google maps does help. But I don’t see how showing my car in the drive way would help, I know I haven’t move the car in a long time. but come on give me a break Google.
    That’s the truth,
    Mauricio
